A choreographed piece, created from my initial group walks. I used this work to see how I could construct a choreography from the initial inspiration of walking and our documentation. The piece works around a structure of walking in horizontal lines forwards and back, always facing forwards, with moments of choreography within this structure.
Created to be viewed from the birds eye perspective, as a map would a geography.
The piece creates a great sense of perspective for the dancers and highlights their relationships to each other and the space. The movement 'episodes' are very present in the moment, in the space and act as small reflections on the dancers experience. Appearing, accumulating and dissolving all most as soon as they arrive.
Below is footage from the performance, images, text and footage of taking the piece to a new site in order to see this might influence it.

1 & 2 with 6 - Creekside, first half, double speed

Taking 1&2 with 6 - The Cottages to a new site following the performances as part of the BA3 choreography show, where it was performed three times, twice successively at 7:30 at the beginning of the evening and once at the end of the evening at approximately 9pm.
This was very interesting because of the change in light from the technical and dress rehearsal and then throughout the three performances. Furthermore, by the dancers performing it successively, they were able to experience the piece in a state of more fatigue, and also without the energy and adrenaline of an opening performance. The second time the piece was performed was the most interesting to watch as many risks were being taken, the light was slightly lower, and the shadows cast from the floodlight were very long, yet there was still a degree of light left from the day. I felt the dancers were more relaxed as for the first performance the audience was much larger than expected and I found quite imposing as they all looked down over the dancers. On the other hand, speaking to audience members who watched from the ground level said they wished that they could have seen from above. Considering the difference in perspectives, I think it would also be valuable to see how the piece would work with the audience taken into the car park and the piece begins, to see what the audience’s reaction is and if they choose to walk with the dancers, or if they stay in space, or even just spread to the outsides of the space to clear a way for the dancers. If I decided that I wanted the audience to walk with the piece I may have to choreograph methods for the dancers to engage with the audience.
The new site that I took the choreography to was a site along Creekside which has recently had developments built, as well as a block of flats there is an artist studio and cafe.
Something which inspired me in terms of sound and structure was feedback from a composer, from watching the performance of 1&2 with 6, the cottages. Within composition his interest lies in polyrhythms and minimal, classical as well as electronic compositions.
Having spoken to him about the piece he said that he gained a sense of community within the space and dancers and noticed many interesting rhythms and structures within it. This was very interesting for me and is something I would like to explore further, and understand better. It has also made me wonder if the natural sounds which can come from the movement as well as the environment could be developed with a composer in order to create a sound score which is developed in the moment of the improvisation through recording, looping, amplification and instant composition.
